ABOUT GERMAN WEEK
A LITTLE BIT OF GERMANY,
RIGHT HERE IN MELBOURNE
ABOUT US
ALL ABOUT GERMAN WEEK
German Week Melbourne is a two-week festival, running every October, built around all things German:
food, music, sport, business, culture and everything in between.
Some events are big and public. Some are small enough to fit in a classroom. All of them exist for the same reason: to make Germany visible in Melbourne, beyond the stereotypes and give Melbourne and Germany a real reason to mix.
The 16,000 kilometres between Melbourne and Germany aren't going anywhere. But for German Week we shrink the gap: bringing the many sides of Germany close enough to actually experience, not just read about.
HOW IT STARTED
German Week didn't start in Melbourne. Brisbane's been running theirs for almost ten years and we just joined the party. We wanted the same energy down here, so we built our own — with just as much heart.
We're a small team of volunteers, doing this properly (yes, very German of us). The idea was never to show off German culture. It was to swap it: a bit of Germany made visible in Melbourne, met with a bit of Melbourne right back.
Turns out the small stuff is the best part. A film generations of Germans grew up with. A song Australians know by heart. The things one side takes for granted can be completely new to the other.
That’s exactly what German Week is here for.
