Behind the Scenes with Albrecht Dürer: Treasures from the NGV Collection

Join NGV curator Dr Petra Kayser for a behind-the-scenes look at highlights from the National Gallery of Victoria’s collection of Albrecht Dürer prints. Described as a ‘one-man Renaissance’, Dürer was a painter, printmaker, publisher and theoretician, whose work revolutionised artistic practice in Germany 500 years ago. His woodcuts and engravings were sold throughout Europe, and by the time he was in his early thirties, he was internationally admired for his extraordinary imagination, innovation and technical mastery. The NGV’s Dürer collection comprises 400 prints and books and is internationally renowned for its quality and comprehensiveness. A selection of these rare works will be on display in the study room for this occasion, including Dürer’s earliest print and his most famous engraving Melencolia.
