About The Event

As a special German Week treat, experience Der Freischütz performed by South Australia’s Co-Opera.

Inspired by German folklore, Carl Maria von Weber’s Romantic opera brings together haunting melodies, atmospheric storytelling and the supernatural world of the German forest.

At its heart is the story of a young forester who, desperate to win his beloved’s hand in marriage, unknowingly enters into a pact with the Devil. Beneath the dark folklore lie timeless themes of fate and free will, temptation and moral weakness, and the tension between the natural and supernatural.

Often regarded as the first major German Romantic opera, Der Freischütz is an atmospheric journey into one of Germany’s most enduring musical tales.
