About The Event

Join Dr. Jo Clyne from the Hellenic Museum for an interactive tour in German using artifacts and exhibits to tell the stories of nineteenth-century German archaeological excavations in Greece. Learn about the controversial and indefatigable figure of Heinrich Schliemann, a German grocery store clerk who read The Iliad and The Odyssey at night, and dreamed of uncovering the lost city of Troy. Hear about the fascinating work of the German Archaeological Institute (Athens) which has been excavating the site of the original Olympics since 1872, and discover a tradition of German philhellenes who were devout admirers of ancient Greece.
